Depression Change Trajectory and Predictors among Male and Female Elderl
Kim Hyang-A

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest the need for different depression prevention strategies for male and female elderly by analyzing trajectories of elderly depression by gender and the characteristics of each trajectory of change. For this study, 1,825 elderly people were selected as research subjects using the data from the 1st~12th years of the Korean Welfare Panel Survey. Latent growth mixture modeling was used to analyze the depression change trajectories among the elderly. When the model with optimal fitness was identified, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, and binomial/multinomial logistic regression were performed using SPSS to identify the characteristics of each trajectory identified from the model. The results of the analysis are as follows. The depression change trajectories among the male elderly were decrease and maintenance, and those among the female elderly were increase, high-level decrease, low-level decrease, and maintenance. Among the male elderly, health and family relationship satisfaction predicted depression change trajectory, whereas among the female elderly, health, family income, and family relationship satisfaction and self-esteem predicted the trajectory. Based on theses findings, practical implications were derived for social welfare for differentiated interventions according to gender.
